FATHER'S DAY AT LONG BAY JAIL

Media Release 1 September 2000

Father's Day will be celebrated at Long Bay jail with a picnic for the families of Drug War prisoners:
9.00 am - 4 pm Sunday 3 September 2000
outside the Long Bay jail complex, NSW, AUSTRALIA
(jail burns at 2 pm)

Entertainment will include music, free hot drinks around a fire, games for kids and the burning of a cardboard replica of a jail. The Freedom Ride and Justice Action will present the picnic.

"We want to bear witness to the suffering created for fathers by the Drug War", said Freedom Rider and father of four, Graeme Dunstan. "Over 95% of prisoners are men, 80% of them are in jail for drug related crimes."

"We want to talk to Drug War prisoners and their families and see what we can do to help each other end the Drug War and heal its wounds," said Brett Collins of Justice Action. "No more drug war prisons, no more drug war prisoners."

"Prisons cost NSW taxpayers $380 mill a year, new jails cost $42 million each. The prison population grows at the rate of 800 new prisoners per year" , he said.

"Instead of spending $60,000 per head per year to punish young men with isolation and brutality, let's spend $60,000 per head per year on healers and helpers, fathering and mentoring, wisdom and honesty".

Or just save the money!

The Freedom Ride has been on a 2 month tour and burned cardboard jails at most of the jail towns of NSW - Grafton, Glen Innes, Tamworth, Cessnock, Bathurst, Junee, Goulburn, and Lithgow. Long Bay will be their last jail gig and guarantees to be a special event.

The final event on their journey for justice before heading off to S11 will be the Sydney 2000 HEMP Olympix in Victoria Park, Glebe from 11 am next Saturday 9 September  (Bong Throw, Joint Rolling, Growers Ironperson)

"We are determined that we will NOT let "globalisation" make Australia a convict colony again."
said Mr Dunstan.
